Task 1: Parts of the Balloon Diagram
Create a diagram in Fireworks, 8" by 11", and label the following parts or concepts: (Morgan/Kelly will send you specific guidelines.)
1. The Envelope
2. Parachute Valve
3. Gores
4. The Basket
5. Burner
6. Buoyancy
7. Gravity
Use the following resources to help you label the diagram:
Task 2: Helium Balloon Vs. Paper Clip Challenge
Task 3: Tissue Paper Envelope Challenge
Task 4: Final Challenge
Step 1: Watch the instructional video on how to build a hot air balloon.
Step 2: Based on the video, create a list of materials that you think you will need. Get the list approved by Morgan and Kelly. Hint: You will need about 9 materials. Use this sheet to orgainize your list of materials.
Step 3: Watch the video again and begin to write down the steps you will need to take in order to construct your own hot air balloon. You can use this sheet to help you organize each step. You will need Morgan or Kelly to approve your steps.
**Also, look at some examples of how instructions are written.
Example 1: Birdhouse
Example 2: Birdbath
Step 3: Watch this video about "reseaming" your hot air balloon envelope (aka: trashbag). Use this sheet to help you organize steps for "reseaming".
Step 4: Now add diagrams and pictures to your step by step instructions. Here is an example. Again, you will need Morgan and Kelly to approve your final diagrams and instructions.
***You will be placed on a Launch Team to construct your balloon.
Extention: If you and your team have successfully completed the design, construction and launch of the basic balloon design, you may have a chance to design another balloon. You may choose to change the shape, materials or challenge the balloon to carry a certain amount of weight.
